We have more than enough beds

The number of people held in Orleans Parish Prison (OPP) continues to decrease. In just one year (April 2015 to March 2016), the jail population decreased by 15 percent, from 1,876 to 1,591 people.

Three facilities are currently available to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office: the new “Phase II” building, the Temporary Detention Center, and the McDaniels Center. With a total of 2,038 beds available and an average daily population of fewer than 1,600, the number of available jail beds exceeds our detention needs.
