Large decrease in people held for the Louisiana Department of Corrections
Between the last quarter of 2015 and the first quarter of 2016, the jail population dropped by about 220 people, or 12 percent. This is primarily because sentenced inmates previously held in OPP were transferred to the custody of the Louisiana Department of Corrections (DOC). The shift resulted in 188 fewer people in jail, or a 67 percent decrease in the DOC population. Historically, large numbers of people sentenced to DOC were serving their sentences in OPP per agreement between the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office and DOC.
