Black men are overrepresented in our jail
The combination of higher arrest rates and longer lengths of stay for black men compared to white men means that black men are overrepresented in the New Orleans jail. Although black men between the ages of 15 and 64 represent 26 percent of the New Orleans population, they represented 82 percent of people in jail on August 2, 2017. These numbers demonstrate that black communities are disproportionately impacted by practices driving incarceration and its resulting harms.
