Sandra van den Heuvel
Sandra was a senior program associate with Vera’s Greater Justice New York initiative, which seeks to end mass incarceration in New York State and create a fairer and more just system. Her research focused on money injustice—how fines and fees, bail, and budgets feed the system of mass incarceration and perpetuate racial disparities. Beyond research and program development, Sandra provided strategic assistance to counties that have committed to a smaller and more equitable justice system. Prior to working at Vera, Sandra was a clinical supervisor for a program within Massachusetts state prisons. She has also worked in the social services department of the New York City Department of Correction, transitional housing programs for people leaving prison, and has interned as a forensic social worker with the Legal Aid Society. She is a licensed social worker.
