Carl Matthies
Carl joined Vera in April 2012 as a senior policy analyst in the Cost-Benefit Analysis Unit. Before coming to Vera, Carl served for seven years as a criminalist in the Los Angeles Police Department's Scientific Investigation Division, where he processed crime scenes, analyzed DNA evidence, and provided expert testimony. Since then he has done research on a variety of criminal justice topics, including police recruitment and hiring, local law enforcement responses to illegal immigration, and the contribution of forensic evidence to felony investigations. Carl holds a BA in biology from Occidental College, a Masters in forensic science from George Washington University, and a PhD in policy analysis from the Pardee RAND Graduate School.
