Vera Institute of Justice Statement on the 2022 U.S. Midterm Elections
11.09.22 -- Statement by Nick Turner, President and Director of Vera Institute of Justice, on the 2022 U.S. midterm election results:
“Voters made it clear that the economy and safety are pressing issues elected officials must prioritize at the local, state, and national levels. They know what makes for safe places—good jobs, housing, services, opportunity, a sense of community, accountable law enforcement, and investments in programs proven to prevent and reduce crime. They expect elected leaders to be accountable and largely rejected the inflammatory crime rhetoric many candidates deployed. They were not fooled by promises that more arrests, jails, and prisons deliver safety. It is time to move past the status quo and build the justice system voters expect—one that is based on human dignity and delivers fairness and safety for all. The Vera Institute of Justice will continue working with legislators on both sides of the aisle for justice and safety.”

About the Vera Institute of Justice
The Vera Institute of Justice is powered by hundreds of advocates, researchers, and policy experts working to transform the criminal legal and immigration systems until they’re fair for all. Founded in 1961 to advocate for alternatives to money bail in New York City, Vera is now a national organization that partners with impacted communities and government leaders for change. We develop just, antiracist solutions so that money doesn’t determine freedom; fewer people are in jails, prisons, and immigration detention; and everyone is treated with dignity. Vera’s headquarters is in Brooklyn, New York, with offices in Washington, DC, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. For more information, visit vera.org.
