Vera’s uniquely detailed historical dataset of incarceration in local jails and state prisons was developed to explore the use of incarceration at the county level. The dataset, which is visualized using the Incarceration Trends data tool, was sourced from the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics; federal, state, and local agencies; and other researchers and agencies.
