With each day, the number of people infected with COVID-19 in Los Angeles—home to the nation’s biggest jail—increases. Los Angeles has taken some critical steps to limit arrests and shrink the jail population. However, officials and system actors must do much more and do it quickly to prevent a catastrophe for public health. Below you’ll find a set of tools for tracking how the Los Angeles criminal justice system is responding to the crisis, including current data on arrests by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), COVID-19 in Los Angeles generally, and the number of people held in the jail system. In addition to the resources on this page, Vera has created a guidance brief on bold changes Los Angeles can take to respond to COVID-19 in its criminal justice system.
